about

You have arrived at the utter depth of winter’s amphitheater.
Vast, elusory drifts of silence lie heaped upon the ground.
Your hands are in the pockets of your pants.
Where are you? You are here.

You have spent so long walking in dust that you can now see its rainbow.
The dirt pounds hard and solid beneath your boots.
No birds sing, but the worms hum a deep hum.
Where are you? You are here.

Your knees rise and fall past each other, as the waves in open water do.
The cadence of a deep, distant guitar string is buzzing from past the treeline.
Somewhere a machine is running, for someone else’s purpose.
Where are you? You are here.

This place has no walls.
This place is outside.
This place is only lit by the memory of sun.
Where are you? You are here.

There once was a way into the depth of winter.
There once was a path plowed through the drifts of silence.
His hands in the pockets of his pants, there someone with a purpose walked.
Where is he? He is here.

A stray growth, a scrap of hallowed ivy, raw and bleeding from the earth.
You see and do not understand, then you understand.
Knees falling, hands digging, tenderly, hesitantly, you lift up the lost insignia.
Where are you? You are here.
